Realism
What Is a Realism Tattoo?
A realism tattoo reproduces a photograph in skin. There are no outlines holding the shapes together. The image is built from light and shadow alone, which is why the style looks the way it does and why it takes longer than most.
Everything rests on contrast. An artist can get every eyelash right and still miss, if the relationship between the light and dark areas is wrong. Get that structure right and the piece reads from across a room.
Most realism is tonal rather than coloured, so the work sits close to our black and grey tattoos.
What It Suits
Subjects That Work Best in Realism
Some subjects carry realism better than others. These are the pieces we see work. Faces have their own considerations, covered on our portrait tattoo page.
Portraits
The most demanding realism there is, because everyone can tell when a face is slightly off.
Animals & Pets
Fur, feathers and eyes give an artist the texture and contrast realism depends on.
Statues & Sculpture
Stone and drapery are ideal subjects. Strong light, deep shadow, no colour needed.
Hands & Eyes
Small studies that live or die on tonal accuracy rather than size.
Memorial Pieces
Tributes and portraits of people you have lost, planned carefully and never rushed.
Sleeves & Large Work
Realism has room to breathe at scale, which is where the finest detail survives.
Colour or Tonal
Colour Realism or Black and Grey?
Colour realism is exactly what it sounds like, and it can be spectacular. It also asks more of the ink and of your aftercare, because coloured pigments vary in how they hold over the years.
Black ink is the most stable pigment in tattooing, so tonal realism ages in a more predictable direction. For portraits and memorial pieces we usually recommend it. Colour earns its place when the subject genuinely depends on it.
If you want bold colour instead of photographic detail, look at our neotraditional tattoos or Japanese style tattoos. For fine, delicate work see fine line tattoos.
Before You Book
Your Reference Photo Sets the Ceiling
Nothing matters more than the photo you bring in, and most people do not know that before their consultation.
A sharp image with strong directional light gives your artist a full range of tone to work from. A dark phone photo or a heavily filtered screenshot does not, and no amount of skill puts back detail the camera never captured.
If the only photo you have is a poor one, say so early. There are ways to work around it, and that conversation is far better before the design than after.
Longevity
How Realism Ages
Realism softens as it settles. Healing takes a little crispness out of the finest detail, which is why a piece often looks sharper on day one than at week six.
Experienced artists build for that. They push contrast harder than the photo appears to need and avoid packing detail tighter than the placement can carry. A piece built that way looks slightly strong when fresh and settles into the right range.
Size is the other half of it. Fine detail needs physical space, so a portrait made too small can blur into one tone over the years. Sun exposure is the fastest way to fade any of it.
Your Visit
What Happens at Your First Session
Book the free 30 minute consultation before you commit to a realism piece. Bring your reference photos, and expect an honest conversation about size, placement and what will hold up over time.
From there the design is drawn, a stencil is placed so you can check it before any ink goes in, and the work is built in layers of shading. Bigger pieces are booked across several sessions with healing time between them.
How you care for it between sessions matters as much as the work itself. Our aftercare guide covers the second skin method we use.
Pricing
Realism Tattoo Prices in Maple Ridge
A one hour tattoo session is $140 and a two hour session is $320. Realism is priced by time like every other style, so the cost follows how long your piece takes.
Realism is rarely a single session. A detailed portrait usually runs several hours, and a sleeve is a project measured in months of appointments rather than one booking. We will map that out with you at your free consultation. You can also see our pricing.
Realism Over an Old Tattoo
Realism is one of the better ways to cover old work, because shading can absorb an existing design into shadow instead of hiding it behind a pattern. What is possible depends on how dark the old tattoo is, so we assess every cover-up in person.
FAQ
Realism Tattoo Questions
The questions people ask us most about realism work.
They usually cost more overall, but not because the rate is different. We charge by time, and realism simply takes more of it. Shading is slower than linework, and detail cannot be rushed without losing the result you came for.
Not because of the style itself. What you feel comes down to placement and how long you sit. Realism sessions tend to be longer, so the honest answer is that it is often a longer sit rather than a sharper one. We break longer sessions up.
A small piece can be a few hours. A detailed portrait usually runs several, often across more than one session. Sleeves are planned over months. We will give you a realistic schedule at your consultation once we have seen the reference and the placement.
They do when they are built with real contrast and given enough size. Genuine blacks against genuine light areas keep reading for decades. Work that is packed too small or built entirely in mid tones flattens sooner. Sun protection makes the biggest difference you control.
Yes. Tonal realism relies on black ink, which shows on every skin tone. The lightest highlights carry less contrast on deeper skin, so the design leans on a bolder tonal range and slightly larger detail. We plan that with you before starting.
